Cape Town Marathon 2027 — First Edition as an Abbott World Marathon Major
23 MAY 2027
The Cape Town Marathon enters history in 2027 as Africa’s first-ever Abbott World Marathon Major, joining the legendary ranks of Boston, London, Tokyo, Chicago, New York, and Berlin. This milestone transforms the event into a global running icon — a celebration of athletic excellence set against one of the most breathtaking backdrops on Earth.
Taking place in May 2027, the race continues to attract thousands of runners from every continent, all eager to experience a course that is fast, flat, and uniquely scenic. Starting and finishing at Green Point Stadium, the route unfolds through Cape Town’s most emblematic landmarks: the shimmering Atlantic seafront, the historic Company’s Garden, the vibrant heart of the city center, and the dramatic silhouette of Table Mountain rising above it all.
With its cool autumn weather, world-class organization, and the unmistakable energy of South African supporters lining the streets, Cape Town offers the perfect stage for personal bests, breakthrough performances, and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re chasing a qualifying time, running for a cause, or simply embracing the spirit of Africa’s running capital, the 2027 Cape Town Marathon delivers an experience where every stride celebrates resilience, diversity, and the beauty of one of the world’s most spectacular cities — now officially a World Marathon Major.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has been officially confirmed as the first Abbott World Marathon Major to be held on African soil. Following the successful staging of its 2026 race on 24 May, the event has passed the second and final stage of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) assessment, becoming the eighth member of the most prestigious marathon series in the world.
The race now stands alongside seven of the sport’s most iconic events — Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, and New York — and will formally enter the series at its next edition on 23 May 2027. While becoming the eighth Major is a remarkable achievement, its status as Africa’s first Major is what truly defines this historic moment.

Cape Town Marathon Experience
More than just a marathon, this is an unforgettable running adventure in one of the world’s most spectacular destinations.
Join us for an extraordinary journey where breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, wildlife encounters, and the excitement of race week come together to create a truly unique experience. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply looking to earn your next marathon medal, Cape Town offers an atmosphere unlike any other.
Your journey will be personally led by Dragoș Pirnog, a passionate runner, explorer, and experienced Cape Town enthusiast. Having visited the city seven times, he knows Cape Town far beyond the typical tourist routes. He has completed the Two Oceans Marathon, Ultra-Trail Cape Town, and the Cape Town Marathon 2026, giving him first-hand knowledge of the races and everything that makes this destination so special.
Throughout the trip, he and our local guides — the same team that supported our group in 2026 — will share their experience, insights, favorite places, and practical race tips, ensuring that every participant enjoys an unforgettable marathon adventure from arrival to the finish line.
Beyond the main event, we have prepared a dedicated travel program showcasing the best of Cape Town and its surroundings: the Cape Winelands wine region, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Fast Track Tickets to Table Mountain — the symbol of the city and one of the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World — and many other memorable experiences.
